Introduction

Buclizine tablet is a prescribed drug for treatment of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness resulted from motion sickness. As Buclizine is an antihistamine, it decreases the symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness by working in the brain. This drug contains dibasic calcium phosphate, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, starch and sucrose as inactive ingredients and comes under the brand name of Longifene in the form of tablets with strength of 25mg to be orally administered.

Indication

Longifene tablets are indicated for control of severe nausea and vomiting and for the treatment of patients suffering from schizophrenia. Caused by systemic illnesses, such as influenza, medications, pain, and inner ear disease, nausea is characterized by the symptoms of loss of personality (flat affect), agitation, catatonia, confusion, psychosis, unusual behavior. Schizophrenia is nothing but a brain disease.

Mechanism of Action

There is a chemical in neurons (nerve cells) that acts as a neurotransmitter and carries information across the synaptic cleft. This chemical is called acetylcholine. Acting as a protective agent against nebulized histamine and intravenously injected histamine in guinea pigs, Longifene tablet blocks the vasodepressor response to histamine and performs a slight blocking action against acetylcholine and helps checking the symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.

Dosage and Administration

The normal dosage for adults and teenagers of Longifene tablets is 50 mg per day or two tablets and which should be taken 30 minutes before traveling. The doses may be repeated at intervals of 4 to 6 hours but should not exceed 150 mg or six tablets in a day of 24 hours.

Side Effects

The commonly caused side effects of Buclizine tablets are drowsiness, dizziness, amenorrhea, blurred vision, skin reactions and hypotension. Cases of neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS) and cholestatic jaundice have been reported as side effects of the consumption of Longifene tablets. The medication may be discontinued if occurrence of leukopenia and agranulocytosis takes place as a side effect to the consumption of these tablets. Less frequent side effects of these tablets include pseudo-parkinsonism and tardive dyskinesia.

Drug Interaction

Depressants and tricyclic depressants should be carefully administered along with Longifene tablets as there are chances of them causing drug toxicity in the body of the patient. Reports of other interaction have not yet been brought to notice. Before taking any kind of medicine along with this drug, a discussion about the same with a doctor should be done.

When Not To Use This Drug

Patients who have developed any kind of allergy towards meclizine, cyclizine, or any kind of antihistamine or any other component of the drug should not be administered with this drug. Patients who are being administered with sodium oxybate (GHB) should not consume these tablets. One who is being currently administered with a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor or was administered with it within the past 14 days should not take this drug. Breast feeding mothers should avoid these as there is possibility of its excretion through milk.

Storage

Store Buclizine tablets in a cool dry place, away from direct heat and light. These tables should be kept away from children and pets. Avoid their contact with moisture.
