Livial In Treatment of Menopausal Symptoms & Osteoporosis

Tibolone, brand name Livial, is a medication used for hormone replacement therapy. It relieves the symptoms of estrogen deficiency (e.g. decreased sex drive, hot flushes, depression) in women who have experienced menopause. This drug also helps to prevent osteoporosis in women caused by the menopause and is at high risk of fractures, but cannot take other medicines used to prevent osteoporosis.

Side Effects

Some common side effects may crop up when using Livial (Tibolone). These include headache, itchiness, lightheadedness, weight changes, rash, upset stomach, vaginal itching or discharge, breast soreness or pain, vaginal emission, growth of facial hair and loss of memory. Some people rarely experience vaginal thrush, weight gain, irregular brown patches on the skin, usually of the face (chloasma), vaginal bleeding or spotting etc. besides other side effects associated with this drug are alteration in results of liver function tests, dizziness, seborrhoeic dermatitis, muscles and joints pain, rash or itching, visual disturbances such as blurred vision, excessive fluid retention in the body tissues, resulting in swelling (oedema), constipation, diarrhea, vomiting nausea, or abdominal pain. It may cause depression and blood clots in the blood vessels (e.g., DVT, pulmonary embolism, heart attack and stroke).

Precautions

 

Before using Livial (Tibolone), you must tell your doctor about any other medical conditions you may have and any other drugs you may be on (including prescription, non-prescription and herbal products). This drug must be used under the direct care of a doctor concerned with its use.

Use caution while administering insevere obesity, past history of endometriosis, varicose veins, blood disorders that raise the risk of blood clots in the veins, e.g. antiphospholipid syndrome, factor v Leiden, past record of fibroids in the womb. Caution is also advised in those who have history of benign breast lumps, long-term inflammation of skin and some internal organs (systemic lupus erythematosus), close family record of breast cancer, personal or family record of recurrent miscarriage, past (endometrial hyperplasia). You need caution if you have personal or family record of blood clots in the veins e.g. pulmonary embolism or else deep vein thrombosis. Women who use drugs to treat blood clots (anticoagulants), e.g. warfarin and smokers also should give focus to caution.

 

 

Contraindication

Livial has been specially warned against use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Active liver disease and vaginal bleeding of unknown cause, history of angina, liver disease are some cases where Livial can’t be recommended. You can’t use it in history of breast cancer, known or suspected cancer in which growth of the cancer is enthused by oestrogen, e.g. endometrial cancer. Women who have a blood clot in a vein of the leg (deep vein thrombosis) or in the lungs (pulmonary embolism), or a past history of these conditions are unworthy to use it. Endometrial hyperplasia), Hereditary blood disorders called as porphyrias are also certain conditions where this drug can’t be recommended.
