Prilosec under the generic name Omeprazole is a well-known over-the-counter drug applied to do effective treatment of heartburn (pyrosis) and other esophagus and acid-related ailments bearing on the stomach. A popular medication over the years, Prilosec was introduced for the first time in 1990 to provide relief from symptoms of ulcerations, stomachic reflux condition and inflammation of the esophagus. This medicinal therapy is also useful in curing an impaired esophagus from the harmful impacts of excess stomach acid, a medical condition called esophagitis.

Reason for Acid Reflux Disease

There are innumerable small pumps that cover the interior of your stomach. Every time you consume, they generate acid in order to get the food digested. Under standard circumstances, an apparatus called the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) functions as a doorway that opens up and closes down, letting food from the gullet and then into the stomach. But, when the LES isn't serving in the right manner or loosening up, an excess amount of acid flows backward into the esophagus. When this reflux effect takes place, you’ll experience agonizing heartburn symptoms.

A Note on Protein Pump Inhibitors

Prilosec (Omeprazole) is basically a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). There are also other PPIs available in the market. The principal role of this assortment of medications is to bring down the output of stomach acids. Proton pump inhibitors like Prilosec are well-recognized for their potency, safety profile and for being the most dominant controllers of acid release on the marketplace. They are also able to transmit protons over a cell's tissue layer in addition to mitochondrion or other sub-cell segments.

Prilosec Mechanism of Action

We’ll now look at the mechanism of action of Prilosec. Much earlier than the stomach pumps embark on generating acid, Prilosec starts blocking them instantly. When the number of dynamic pumps is cut down, the stomach can still produce sufficient acid for transforming food into absorbable contents, whereas forbidding superfluous acid from giving rise to heartburn soreness. Prilosec comprises the active ingredient Omeprazole, which is intended to prevent generating acid by choking up the enzymes present in the stomach walls that create acid. This blocks stomachic cells from releasing hydrochloric acid that lowers the acidity of the stomach orifice. When the acid level recedes, the stomach and esophagus can heal substantially.

Prilosec Slow-Release Functionality

As Prilosec is a slow-release medication, it doesn't start functioning right away. Most of the time, it requires 1-4 days before it is completely in effect. Alternatively, some individuals experience full relief from the symptoms of heartburn inside 24 hours. As far as duration of the treatment is concerned, Prilosec must not be consumed for more than two weeks out of a 4-month period of time. If you detect recurring signs shortly after discontinuing treatment or at some stage in the 4-month time period, confer with your physician or medical practitioner. Always follow your physician’s guidelines regarding dosage and administration though Prilosec can be purchased without any prescription.
