Premarin is used to treat symptoms of menopause such as vaginal dryness, hot flashes, burning. It is also helpful in prevention of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. This drug is supplemented as a replacement of estrogen in women who lack enough estrogen due to castration (removal of the ovaries), ovarian failure or inefficiency of hormone-secreting organs (hypogonadism). Conjugated estrogen is sometimes used as part of treatment of advanced prostate and breast cancer. In some cases it also treats abnormal uterine bleeding caused by hormonal imbalance.
Dosing
A 0.3 mg/day is recommended as a usual starting dose for treating menopause symptoms and for treating postmenopausal osteoporosis. It may be taken in a continuous or cyclical interval (i.e., 25 days on therapy then 5 days off treatment).
Hypogonadism or incompetence of gonads requires dosages of 0.3 mg or 0.625 mg on a daily basis with a cycle. Females with castration or ovarian failure, 1.25 mg should be dispensed every day in a cyclic time interval of 3 weeks on treatment and 1 week off treatment. In the treatment of breast cancer, a 10 mg dose is suggested for daily use for 3 months.
In uncharacteristic uterus bleeding caused by hormonal instability, one 25 mg injection by means of a vein or into a muscle is given. Next injection may be administered in 6-12 hours if considered necessary.
A ½ to 2 g daily of vaginal cream is used in the treatment of vulvar and vaginal atrophy, and the recommended dose is. Women with l ow estrogen levels due to reduced ovary function, 0.3 to 0.625 milligrams daily is administered, taken cyclically.

Side Effects
Premarin has also some side effects. These effects are almost minor and momentary. But, some may be harsh. From common side effects we can mention nausea, headache, vaginal bleeding, nervousness, joint pain back pain, and abdominal pain.
There are also serious adverse effects such as bleeding and spotting, unusual discharge or milk production, breast enlargement, chest pain, tenderness, forgetfulness and confusion.
This is not a whole list of all adverse effects. Ask your doctor and follow all his directions when you are taking Generic Premarin.
There is potentiality for breast pain, overly extended periods or loss of periods, breast enlargement. Use of this drug may also cause some skin diseases such as rash, and melasma (tan or brown patches) on the cheeks, forehead, or temples and may hang on yet after the discontinuation of the drug. This drug may lead to high calcium levels in the blood (hypercalcemia) in patients who have breast and bone cancer. In some cases it causes blood pressure and triglyceride levels.
A lot of drugs interact with Premarin. Hence it should not be taken with other drugs such as rifampin (Rifadin, Rifamate, Rifater, Rimactane); a thyroid drug for example levothyroxine (Synthroid); a blood thinner like warfarin (Coumadin); itraconazole (Sporanox) or ketoconazole (Nizoral) itraconazole (Sporanox); seizure drugs such as oxcarbazepine (Trileptal), phenytoin (Dilantin), felbamate (Felbatol), carbamazepine (Tegretol), or primidone (Mysoline).
These are some few drugs. But other drugs also interact with Premarin. Let your doctor know on the subject of all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you are using. Ask your doctor before using a new medication.
Premarin is contraindicated for use in pregnancy. So if you suppose to be pregnant, don’t make use of it. Avoid its use if you have allergy to any ingredient in it. It can’t be used in liver problems or liver disease, or the blood disease porphyria. Use of this drug should also be avoided in abnormal vaginal bleeding, blood clots or circulation disorders. It should be avoided in recent (within the last year) stroke or heart attack.
